Our terrifying night

Tessa got her tonsils out last Thursday--8 days ago.  The recovery was much more drawn out and difficult than I expected, but we managed. The discharge instructions told us all of the things we needed to do to prevent bleeding and we were following them strictly. No rough play, all soft foods, plenty of liquids, rest, etc.

T was just starting to turn a corner Monday and Tuesday and we were relieved as it had been an exhausting weekend of pushing nasty tasting meds and fluids on her.  Unfortunately, everyone in the household had icky colds with icky coughs, Tess included.

So Tuesday night at about 12:30, Hattie came into our room and said Tessa was coughing so much it was keeping her awake. (They are now sleeping in the same bed because they're inseparable.) Shortly after Tessa came in, too, so we were all cuddled up in the our bed. Tessa kept coughing, so Dave took H downstairs so they could get some sleep. T kept coughing, which made me nervous because I knew it wasn't good for her throat. A few coughs later, she whimpered and got out of bed and walked out into the living room. I'll have to admit I was annoyed because I was so tired and just wanted to sleep. I followed her out and found her leaning over a pool of blood on the floor. Fear. That was all I felt. I screamed for Dave downstairs: "She's bleeding!" And she kept bleeding. It was pouring out of her mouth. I got a bucket for her. It was bright red and every once in a while a blood clot would come out. T was making these awful retching noises, and in between the noises, this growling noise. I can't describe it, but I'll never forget it.
Unfortunately, Hattie was awake and came upstairs with Dave. Dave and I were extremely scared and not hiding it well, so obviously Hattie was scared too. I am so proud of her, though, because when I yelled at her to get her shoes and put them on she did it with lightning speed and did everything I asked her to very quickly.
She didn't get a good look at what was going on with Tessa until we all piled into our van. When she did, Tessa had blood and blood clots pouring down her chin. Hattie saw that and gave out a scared yelp/scream. But she got into her car seat and we took off, with Dave standing over T's seat, holding the bucket, and trying to comfort her and Hattie.  It was storming and raining pretty hard and I can guarantee you I didn't stop at a single stop sign. It's about a 7 minute drive to the hospital, but it felt like it took FOREVER.

We pulled up to the ER doors and hopped out. I ended up with T and the bucket of blood and I went inside while Dave got Hattie out. I will never forget the looks on the people's faces who were in the ER waiting room. I stood there, with what I'm sure was a frenzied, dazed look on my face. There was a couple sitting at the registration desk, getting registered and when they looked behind them at me, who was covered in blood, and Tessa, who was covered in more blood, and the bloody bucket I was holding, they jumped out of their chairs and made room for me to sit. I didn't, of course, just quickly gave the clerk my name and phone number and was ushered into a room by a nurse. By this time the bleeding had mostly stopped on its own, so after being shown to our room it was very calm. Tessa cuddled in my lap and after a while Hattie entertained us by singing and dancing to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, her new favorite song.

The ENT doc on call came in, took a look, and said the best he could tell the bleeding had stopped on its own, but he wanted to put her under, knock off the scabs and cauterize the sites to be on the safe side. So they did.

We needed to get Hattie home but only had one car, so Dave called his work and the watch commander gave Hattie and I a ride home. She and I were in bed by 2:45. Dave spent the night with Tess at the hospital. The next morning I took Hattie to daycare because they were practicing their preschool graduation and she didn't want to miss it then went to the hospital.  T got discharged shortly after. I had stuff scheduled at work throughout the day, so I went back and forth from work to home several times.

The bleeding didn't set T back as much as we thought it would, although she's nowhere near 100%. Mostly she's tired and she's not eating or drinking much. I think her throat is feeling better every day, though.

I took pictures of the bloody bucket. I see a fair amount of blood at work every once in a while and it's no big deal. But holy shit, when it's coming out of your own child it is TERRIFYING. I compared the scene Tuesday night to a horror movie. We had blood on our floor, she had actually started bleeding a little on our comforter, her jammies were covered, my shirt, Dave's shorts.

Dave and I both work well under pressure. That's part of our job. But that all goes out the window when something is happening to your child. I've sat and critiqued everything I did--thought about what I could have done better, faster, etc. I'm just so very happy T is okay. And I don't know how parents of very sick children do it. This last week has exhausted me.
